Book Review: Else B. In the Sea

Gifted product. All opinions are my own.

In the 1930’s artist and adventurer Else Bostelmann had a very unique job. She was the eyes for explorer William Beebe as he described what he saw from a bathysphere in the depths of the ocean. He talked and she painted what no human had seen before.

Compiled into a beautiful children’s book, “Else B. In the Sea, The Woman Who Painted the Wonders of the Deep” tells the reader a little about the life of Else Bostelmann and how she illustrated the wonders of the waters surrounding Bermuda. Written by Jeanne Walker Harvey and illustrated by Melodie Stacey, “Else B. In The Sea” dives into a time before underwater photography or videography by highlighting the innovation of scientific pioneers and STEM leaders that helped uncover a watery biosphere few have seen up close.

This isn’t the first book Jeanne Walker Harvey has written to shine a light on fine art and STEM. One of our favorite books, about one of our favorite artists and teachers – Alma Thomas – is a part of her collection as well as a biography of artist/architect Maya Lin, the designer of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC. This newest book on Else Bostelmann is just as fabulous and is sure to be as momentous as the others.

This true story, seemingly from the pages of science fiction, exposes readers of all ages to the importance of fine art in all disciplines – especially STEM. Else Bostelmann wasn’t just an artist, but an important figure in marine science. Melodie Stacey, the illustrator, does a terrific job translating Jeanne Walker Harvey’s work into a visual masterpiece, much the same way Bostelmann did for Beebe, and we are looking forward to enjoying this for years to come. This is a read that deserves a permanent place in your book collection and we were privileged to one of the first families to read it. It’s not just an addition to your bookshelves, but an important piece for your art collection as well.
