Homeschooling with Sonlight – 50 States Unit Study

Disclaimer: I was compensated for my time in exchange for my honest review.

A New Year means trying out new things! I love fresh starts and so does Cash – new notebooks, fresh supplies, and sometimes new curriculum. For us, new means getting to explore a few of Sonlight’s options for homeschool.

We’re trying out Sonlight for ourselves and are starting with their 50 States Unit Study for 7 – 14 and their Science Level C for students in 3rd – 5th grade. As the homeschool parent, you have the freedom to chose the individual courses that work best for your child or even a full grade level curriculum. You’ll get to hear about both of the units as we work through them, but first up is the 50 States Unit Study.

Cash and I love to travel. Homeschool Field Trips are a core element of our homeschool and though we love to travel internationally there is nothing more fascinating than our own beautiful state of Alabama. Cash has just reached the point in his studies where we’re turning our attention to Alabama for history. What better way to start than with a general State unit study with a focus on notebooking!

What you get in the brand new 50 States Unit Study:

  • The colorful, hardback book , “The 50 States: Explore the USA with 50 fact-filled maps!” by Gabrielle Balkan
  • The 50 States Unity Study Instructor’s Guide with 36 weeks of lessons and consumable Notebooking pages for students to create their own State History Notebook
  • If you already have the book, you can opt to purchase the Instructor Guide only

Before we even began the Unit Study, Cash absconded with “The 50 States” book. Each text is carefully and thoughtfully curated and the books in all of their curriculum selections is a treasure in itself that can be used for years to come. Cash enjoyed exploring all of the states in the oversized book and loved the state flag pages in the back.

When Sonlight says “ No-prep” they mean it. As soon as you open the big Sonlight box you’ll find a card with simple directions to get started, a Sonlight App to download, and magnet to place on your fridge for quick support. The lesson plans are simple and broken down by week. For us Week One was a creative look at our state as Cash created his own State notebook cover page. It was a fun activity that sparked engaging conversation and began our lesson off on a high note.

Week Two was just as engaging. Cash took the time to identify Alabama in the book and on a US State map for his notebook. What would have been a 15 minute activity extended into an hour of exploring the book and the map, talking about other states that he had visited. Want to study additional states? You can make copies of the notebook pages and use this to study more than just one area.

Intrigued? We’ll keep you up to date on how The 50 States Unit Study is going and we’ll also fill you in on Science Level C with Sonlight in the near future. If you can’t wait, head to Sonlight to try them out for yourself – you’ll find a full catalog of great options for your homeschool and free samples to try. In fact, Sonlight even has a opportunity to win a U.S. Elections Lapbook that I’ll link here in the blog!
