Use Technology to Supercharge Learning with Forbrain

Disclaimer: I was compensated for my time in exchange for my honest review.

I come from the generation of tube televisions, Tandy computers, VHS tapes, and home phones and the age of technology has taken this Mama for a serious spin these last few years. I’ve adjusted the best that I can but I realize that I need to embrace Tech or get left behind. Step one is finding ways to include technology in my homeschool. With that, let me introduce you to Forbrain.

What is Forbrain?

Forbrain by Sound for Life is an innovative approach to enhancing your child’s (and your) learning. This attractive and simple to use training device amplifies the voice and transmits the sound via bone conduction. The device itself is a lightweight headset with an attached microphone, Bone Conduction Transducers, and Filter. It comes in a compact vinyl zipper case with foam cutouts for all of the pieces of your Forbrain including a USB charger, double ended Jack plug (for connecting to a computing or recording device), secondary instructor microphone and a booklet with tips and exercises.

To use the Forbrain, turn on the device and position the hoop behind your head – not on top – and place the transducers (round blue pads) on the temporal bone in front of the ears, close to the cheek. Then adjust the microphone about an inch or so in front of the mouth. Speak normally into the microphone. What you’ll hear clearly, though the device is not in or on your ears, is your own voice. The sound is delivered directly to the inner ear. Adjustments to the volume are not needed unless you are hard of hearing or hypersensitive.

What is the Forbrain used for?

Forbrain, put simply, is for hearing yourself, or another voice, that will help anyone who benefits from auditory learning take their skills to the next level using this technological device. Auditory Learning is nothing new. We’ve all repeated words to ourselves in order to memorize them. Actors “run lines” as part of their show preparation. Spelling Bee enthusiasts call out their ordered alphabet verbally. We use mnemonics and sing answers to prepare for tests. Saying things aloud help us commit things to memory. Now imagine doing those same things but with more focus and effectiveness. That’s what Forbrain does for you and your child.

Enhance your Learning by using Forbrain to:

  • Practice reading – you can let a child read to themselves or you can use the included additional microphone to help them with pronunciation or engagement in the story. They can hear voice along with yours!
  • Listen to recordings – studying a lecture or listening to an online class using the Forbrain helps reinforce the lesson.
  • Sing a song or rehearse for a performance – You’ll often see professional musicians and actors hold their ear closed to hear themselves more clearly when practicing or on stage. Being able to hear yourself is very beneficial and fine tunes your art.
  • Learn another Language – language learning is about clear communication and using Forbrain to listen to nuances in a language will have you communicating faster and more effectively.

How are you using Forbrain?

My son was already familiar with the Forbrain. One thing most Gifted and Neurodiverse Learners seem to have in common is a hyper focus on subjects and topics that interest them and a total disregard for things that don’t. My child initially used Forbrain to help him speed up his completion time in math competitions. He would rattle off problems and their answers to math facts, until he felt confident that he could recall them quickly. It worked and he shaved off minutes for his efforts. Fascinated by the sound of his own voice, he applied the Forbrain to learning difficult spelling words, then calling out to himself elements of the Periodic Table and their atomic weights. In Geography, he would wear it while memorizing world monuments.

I have been using the Forbrain with him more recently as an aid in areas I felt he could use improvement. Though he had pegged it as a tool for memorization, I found that the best way to use it was to improve diction. For my son’s musical theater class, his Forbrain helped him commit lyrics to memory for songs he would be performing and listen for when he sounded raspy or pitchy while singing. The improvements were very apparent almost as soon as he began using it. Another class we added the Forbrain to is his Spanish class. I’m not a native speaker and neither is anyone in our household or acquaintance. Listening more carefully to the small details in the language as spoken by his native speaker instructor has really taken his Spanish up a notch. Not only has his diction improved but his grasp of Spanish overall has also improved.

Though I use our Forbrain to enhance our homeschool and improve focus for my Gifted Learner, the device is especially beneficial for various levels of neurodiversity including those who have speech therapies, are on the autism spectrum, ADHD, Auditory Processing disorders, reading difficulties, and other special needs.

Sure, the technology can be scary. But it can also open new doors for learning that we are just beginning to fully explore. The Forbrain makes full use of that technology and helps us hone in on our most important learning tool – our own brains. Using over 30 years of auditory stimulation research and development, Forbrain applies its technology to creating a tool that helps a child not only love to learn but learn more effectively. The product is not only non-evasive and safe but improves focus and recall for learners of all ages with just a few minutes of use daily.

I’m a fan. But as always, I’ll encourage you to see for yourself. Check out the Forbrain Demo.
