Demystify Coding with MYTEK LAB

Disclaimer: I was compensated for my time in exchange for my honest review.

I’ve got a Techie Kid. I’ve known this since he was tiny playing with various robots and coding toys for toddlers. But I’m an artsy Mama. It doesn’t mean I can’t figure out all the tech stuff, it just means I don’t want to. And the older my son gets the more complicated (to me) all of the technology gets. I’m having trouble keeping up with his demands for Python, C++, Scratch, Word blocks, and Java (actually I get that one… I need coffee right now…). What’s a Mama to do? Sign her kid up for a Computer Technology Class with MYTEK LAB!

What is MYTEK LAB?

MYTEK LAB is a family owned business by Stephen and Jacky Sounders that offers comprehensive online class in Technology. Both are teachers with backgrounds in both education and IT, and their vision – MYTEK LAB – helps kid learn the skills needed to compete in a world where Tech is King and most people are consumers of technology instead of producers. Using fun, live interactive classes and self-paced “Flex Pace” classes that allow students to learn at their convenience, Students get a chance to explore coding, digital design, 3D rendering, game design, web design, robotics, and more, to use their skills for real world application. MYTEK LAB designs their courses for Learners in grades 3 – 12.

How does MYTEK LAB work?

MYTEK LAB offers computing and technology classes via their own online platform. Using their home computer, a Student logs into their MYTEK LAB dashboard and selects the course they are enrolled in. MYTEK LAB offers select Flex Pace classes and live, scheduled weekly classes with a start and stop date. Everything your student needs is located on the MYTEK Lab platform including the applications needed for the class. Just log in and learn.

For Live classes, students attend classes via a zoom link where they can interact with the instructor and ask questions. They can also chat with other students in a moderated setting. Classes last on average, 50 minutes and in addition to working along with the instructor, they are given work to complete for a grade by the next week’s class. Within the Dashboard itself, students can display their work and view completed projects by other students as well as contact the MYTEK LAB team with any additional questions they might have. Miss a class? A Recording of the lesson is available after the day’s class has ended. Live Classes are $49/month for all class levels and ages.

Flex Pace classes are prerecorded lessons released every Monday. It gives students the flexibility to work a class into their current schedule without the need to be present for a live class. A weekly class release maintains current content since technology rapidly changes while static recorded classes quickly become outdated. You register and chose when your student starts the course. Flex Pace classes with MYTEK LAB are a flat fee of $199 per class.

What MYTEK LAB computer class is your Student taking?

My son, Cash, is taking Computer Technology 1 – Elementary with MYTEK LAB. It’s geared to their youngest students who range between ages 8 – 12, and focuses on introducing a little of everything surrounding technology. It’s a year long course, ending in May, and is constructed with the beginner in mind with no prerequisites needed. In Cash’s very first class, he was able to create his very own avatar to use on the MYTEK LAB dashboard and learned the background of the pixel. By the next class, he had begun coding his very own video game using programming logic and language.

Listening in on Cash’s class from my kitchen, I was impressed with how patient and encouraging the instructors are. Gifted Kids develop anxiety quickly about new things but every piece of the lesson was delivered with a calm tone of voice and the reassurance that getting it immediately or perfectly wasn’t important. These are skills that should be practiced and if something was missed, they are glad to repeat the steps, go over it, or provide more help later. There is no stress during the lessons and Cash looks forward to them every Tuesday. We missed a class one week due to traveling and Cash was very excited to sit down with the recorded lesson to catch up. The lesson was delivered right to my email but at any time, he could also check for any missed assignments or videos he can review right from his dashboard. He found it very convenient to cast the recording to the television and to follow along with the video from his computer, pausing and rewinding as needed to complete any steps or try different ways to code.

MYTEK LAB is a wonderful addition to our homeschool. Cash is enjoying the class and especially looking forward to exploring 3D modeling since he’s been asking to get a 3D printer. Before the class is over, he’ll get to try his hand at VR Development, Robotics, 3D Modeling for Games, more Programming, Web Design, and Game Art, in addition to Computer Fundamentals. Completing this course constitutes a Computer Education Credit. I can easily see us taking computer and technology classes with MYTEK LAB for years to come.
