As a Military family, American History is a very important subject that we don’t take lightly. Daddy is an Air Force Veteran and our two oldest boys are enlisting this year as well. I come from generations of proud military service and my personal knowledge of American History is pretty extensive. But I don’t want Cash’s American History to be hard. I believe in working smarter, and I refuse to complicate my homeschool day. Because of bias and very limited points of view some home educators choose to compile their own history unit. Others use multiple curricula and try to piece History together. However, Cash and I took a look at a much easier solution! We used BookShark’s Intro to American History, Year 1 of 2, Reading with History Level D (ages 8-11) !

BookShark, Intro to American History Level D, is a Literature-Based approach to teaching history. Using a wide variety of sources, including reference books, classics, narratives, biographies, poetry, songs, and hands on learning materials, BookShark helps American History come to life for your student. In your BookShark Box, you’ll receive everything you need for your 4 day, 36 week course. And I mean everything! True to its name you’re going to get TONS of Books – all vetted and curated by the experts at BookShark – and much of the award winning literature provided will be very familiar to you. You’ll also get BookShark’s signature big blue binder which includes everything you need to help guide your child through the course. Need an idea of when everything happens? Follow along in their Timeline Book to put the dates in perspective.

BookShark Intro to American History, Level D – Reading with History

For the days you need to take your learning on the go, load up your BookShark tote bag with your books and the day’s lesson and hit the road. Studying American History out in nature or at the local history museum really changes your student’s learning atmosphere. Need to travel even lighter? Check out BookShark’s optional Virtual Seat, and have everything that’s in your binder, digitally. I’m a paper person but it was really fun and easy for my son to access not only his daily work from his tablet, but assessments and quizzes too. As the instructor, you can take a look at completed lessons and grades. This option is perfect for the independent learner or even just the family on the go.

As for content, I failed to see anything that they missed and I loved discussing the topics that came up daily from the curriculum. Some conversations were very hard but necessary – if you don’t learn your history, you’re doomed to repeat it. My homeschool has a focus on Global Citizenship and the first step to obtaining that status is learning as much as we possibly can about our home country. With BookShark we were able to dive deep and accomplish that goal with minimal effort on my part.

If you’re looking for a solid, unbiased, Literature-based American History Curriculum, BookShark’s Intro to American History, Year 1 of 2, Reading with History Level D may be the right curriculum for you. 1. Wow, this looks like a great curriculum. I love it when the curriculum is based around novels. It just makes history come alive. Some of those books I used with my kids too. They’re winners for sure!
