Brighten up your Homeschool with Sonlight

As summer slowly draws to a close, homeschool families everywhere are solidifying their choices for this fall’s curriculum. If you haven’t already, I’d like you to take a look at Sonlight. A full, all in one curriculum with the Christian Homeschooling family in mind, Sonlight takes all of the work out of planning, yet makes its products flexible and easy to customize.

Cash and I took the time this summer to further explore the 50 States Unit Study by Sonlight and their Science C for 3rd – 5th graders Lit-based curriculum. In previous reviews we gave a breakdown of each resource but this time we want to give an update on how it’s going.

As Cash approaches his official 4th grade year, per our state standards, we are beginning Alabama History. We used the 50 States Unit Study to get a general overview of all 50 States and formulate a solid understanding of the entire makeup of the United States. A great basis for history is first understanding where you come from and where you live – Sonlight gives you just what you need and provides a great starting point for history. Between the activity pages and map studies, we give it a solid nod for making US History and Geography simple and directive while still leaving plenty of room for creativity and rabbit trails.

In using Science C for 3rd – 5th graders, this curriculum added a ton of fun into our Summer learning. We typically study STEAM in the summer months but this gave Cash a chance to continue his learning on his own without my help. Each week, he would pull a lesson and experiment from the curriculum to explore and end the week “presenting” his findings. If you also have a kid that loves to read and is self directed, this may be an option you’ll enjoy as well. Each book from the science curriculum has become a valuable addition to our homeschool library and he references them often outside of the coursework. I’d love to continue his independent science studies into next semester using the remainder of our Sonlight Science C and moving on to Science D afterward.

In addition to Unit Studies and Science, Sonlight runs the gamut in options for homeschool AND learning at home. No matter the subject, you’ll find sound educational resources that are faith based and a curriculum well worth both the time and the money.
