Add Rigor back into your Homeschool Math with CTCMath

Disclaimer: I was compensated for my time in exchange for my honest review.

I try not to be repetitive. But when something works, it works. And CTCMath works. If you’re looking for a math curriculum that makes life easy for both the teacher and the learner – go with CTCMath. Looking for something rigorous with both US and International math standards integrated in the lessons? Go with CTCMath. Have a mathy kid that can’t get enough of learning mathematics well beyond his years? Go with CTCMath.

I’ve given you a breakdown of the curriculum before on the blog, so let me take a different approach and tell you what this program does for advanced/gifted learners and breakdown a few of the commonly asked questions from a parent (and kid) perspective.

My kid is “mathy”. That means, in its simplest term, that he enjoys math, spends an extensive amount of time working with numbers, and explores math in real life applications without prompting. It’s our first subject in the mornings – which works out great for me – because I DONT TEACH MY SON MATH! I drink coffee and I wait for him to finish whatever he’s working on so that we can start any number of other subjects, such as Spanish, or Grammar, or Science.

It’s not that I can’t teach math – it’s that I don’t want to. CTCMath does such a great job with their platform that I can confidently let my son log on to their site, access his lesson (or lessons) for the day and complete them without any help from me. If I want to know how he’s doing, I only need to look at the parent dashboard to review grades, problems attempted, missed questions, as well as lessons completed.

Is CTCMath a curriculum or supplement?

CTCMath is a full online math Curriculum that includes video lessons, practice work, and testing for grades K-12. Need records or grades for recording? Print them. I ask my son to print (or download) one assignment from the day. I take that print out and add it to his official work binder for the semester. Sometimes he brings me grade level work, other times, it’s several grades ahead. With our subscription, my son can access all of their math levels from K – 12.

So, is the CTCMath Online math program on level?

Yes, in fact, I’d say with the rigor involved it actually scales up a grade. However, you can easily go up or down a grade level if you feel as if the work is too challenging or not challenging enough. Skipping around is encouraged and my son enjoys seeing what the “big kids” are working on. Attempting higher grade levels also keeps him sharp for competition math and he consistently works a grade or two above his age.

Want your child to have a more worldview of math or are they considering a field in the sciences (or even the military)? Have them complete work using metrics. As a kid I always thought the US customary system of measurements was complicated and as a homeschool mom, I decided not to teach them first, which is standard for most US school children. Using the parent dashboard, I create assignments for my son that are specifically covering metrics so that he receives extra practice. We used primarily Grade 4 for this review and he did everything from converting measurements and choosing the best metric for measuring common daily things, such as distance or liquid volume. Next up, I’ll assign my son more multiplication and fractions to keep him sharp.

Is CTCMath Mastery or Spiral Learning?

CTCMath would tell you its goal is Mastery, using more questions and increasing difficulty to hone the student’s skills in math. However, I’d say it’s both, depending on how you as the parent use it. You have the entire curriculum at your disposal. If you feel as if your child could use a refresher in a topic or build up their number sense, just assign the appropriate lessons for completion. There is a test on each topic and you can decide how many questions they need to complete the level. I have specifically assigned Grade 1 or 2 lessons just to have him brush up on a needed skill or stay in practice. Whatever you decide, you can be confident that each section they complete means that your learner has a strong understanding in that area.

Parent ProTip: Set the pass level high for completing an area for even greater mastery. My son has to complete his work at 90% or attempt it again.

Will CTCMath work for a family on the go?

CTCMath doesn’t need a textbook, has detailed video lessons, testing, and has been converted to work on most devices including phones. Take it with you! My family loves to travel and by using CTCMath we know that my son’s math fascination can travel with him. Have tablet, will travel! You can subscribe a CTCMath Homeschool Membership on a monthly or yearly plan. It’s $29.97 monthly or $197 yearly for one student. There is also price break for multiple students.
