There are SO many options for ELA and SO many topics to cover – phonics, reading, spelling, writing, grammar… the list seems endless. But Cash and I may have an option for you if you want to cover a multitude of topics with practical applications – Grammar Galaxy (www.funtolearnbooks.com)
For Grammar Galaxy, you only need two books – The Instructor’s Manual and the Student Guide, better known as the Mission Manual. Implementation is simple. Chose your child’s level (Grammar Galaxy covers most grade school ages in 7 different levels) and start reading the Chapter text from the Teacher Guide. If your child is a reader already you can have them read the text themselves as well. For the parent/teacher this curriculum is simple implement and has low parent involvement, with full answer keys in both the teacher and student guides.

My son, Cash, who’s 7 years old and a very strong reader, explored Volume 2, Protostar (Around 3rd grade). Students who use this level of the curriculum should have completed the skills from the first level, Nebula. You will need one Mission Manual per student, which can be ordered separately, and the Teacher Guide. In addition to the consumable textbook and guide, you can also elect get the Digital versions and the Audiobook. You can also add optional Flashcards that can be purchased as a printable PDF. If you aren’t sure where to start use Grammar Galaxy’s online placement test.
This entire Grammar Galaxy curriculum reads like a fun adventure story, making Language Arts a subject my child looked forward to. Cash’s Mission Manual started with him signing his Guardian of the Galaxy Pledge which charges him with reading good books daily. Rich vocabulary is introduced in each lesson, reading comprehension is challenged with relevant questions, and right from the start he’s given templates to write his own book report! From my parent teacher point of view, Grammar Galaxy was able to sneak a lot of learning into one curriculum!
By the second lesson, we moved onto Classic books. In the third lesson, Myths. By the time you reach Mission 36 in the curriculum, children have been introduced to a number of ELA concepts including Literature, Spelling and Vocabulary, Grammar, as well as Composition and Public Speaking. A single mission can be completed all at once (our preferred method – around 45 minutes to an hour) or broken into three separate days. Grammar Galaxy certainly makes ELA an easy part of your day, even if all these details sound complicated! I was very impressed with the ease of use and we plan to continue to be Guardians of the Galaxy in the future.
