Skill Sharpeners Geography – Grade 1

Cash loves Geography. Everything from Landforms to Country Populations. But as a homeschool Mom with a kid that learns a ton of his Geography Information on his own out of pure interest, I wanted to make sure he was doing more than memorizing capitals. Evan-Moor’s Skill Sharpeners Geography for Grade 1 helps me with that and their Skill Sharpeners Series connect what your child is learning at school with what they should practice at home – it’s not just for the Homeschool crowd!

The Geography Unit covers:

  • Nonfiction Reading Selections
  • Comprehension Activities
  • Map Skills practice
  • Vocabulary Practice
  • Writing Prompts
  • Hands-on Activities

No teacher/parent manual is necessary, however each book also includes a free downloadable teaching guide if you need a little boost. Read the selections with your child, complete the visual and vocabulary activities, and use the hands-on activities to assist them in understanding the world that they live in. I loved the way the book progressed – we started with a basic understanding of maps and directions, and gradually moved on to where things are located, the compass and cardinal directions, as well learned the correct terminology that accompanies general cartography.

Cash enjoys Evan-Moor’s Skill Sharpeners Geography for Grade 1 and does not hesitate to pull it out to work with on his own. I only need to hover nearby and he is guaranteed to ask me about animals on the Plains or to inquire further about the Community Helpers mentioned within its pages. I enjoy knowing that even when I miss something Evan-Moor fills in those blanks, no matter how large or small.

If this Skill Sharpener looks interesting to you, don’t hesitate to check out the others they offer, not just for Geography and Grade 1, but for Pre-K to 6th grade in 8 different subject areas. These are 144, full-color pages of learning and fun. Head to http://www.evan-moor.com to find more from Evan-Moor including the workbook featured here.
