As a homeschooler, do you worry about testing? Testing is pretty standard in traditional school and it’s required for reporting in some places. So what do you do if your child needs testing as a homeschooler?
Hewitt Learning, in addition to a wonderful and comprehensive ELA curriculum, offers the PASS (Personalized Achievement Summary System) Test. For many states, provinces, and territories testing is a required part of homeschooling. Testing in specialized facilities can be very costly and time consuming. The PASS Test can be administered at home, is untimed, and tests levels – not grades. Check with your area homeschooling regulators to see if the PASS Test is approved for your reporting requirements, BUT even if it isn’t, you’ll want this done for your own records to track the progression of your learner.
For Alabama, reporting and portfolio submission is not required for homeschoolers. But as a parent with an advanced learner, I really wanted a baseline done for my son’s academics. You can begin using the PASS Test with your students around 3rd grade. The final level is around 8th grade. I definitely recommend using it sooner or later, once or twice a year, I f you have a learner that fits within those academic grade levels.
This is Scantron scored testing. If you plan to have your children re-enter traditional school at a later date, it may be beneficial to you to use the PASS Test to introduce standardized testing to your child and to aid in providing evidence of educational milestones being met at home. The Test begins with a preliminary placement assessment. It’s very brief, with a few questions for each of 3 test sections : Language, Reading, and Math. The parent scores it and in turn determines the appropriate level to begin at for each test section. There is no need to complete the entire test booklet. From here your student completes the testing on their own, with the parent as the moderator, until each section is complete with the Scantron bubbled in correctly. Return the completed Answer sheet via mail and expect to receive test scores in the mail within 2 to 4 weeks.
