Math. Such a HEAVY subject for both parents and educators alike. As the fall approaches the question I receive the most in messages and email is “What are you using for math?” My answer is simple. Everything!
I got a chance to try out and review CTCMath ( https://www.ctcmath.com )with the Homeschool Review Crew and I wanted to share my opinions of the program with you and for someone, perhaps relieve a bit of Curriculum burden.
First, let me tell you a little about the program. CTCMath is a digital subscription that you can get monthly or yearly in either a single or family membership. CTCMath covers grades K – 12 and if you aren’t sure where your child falls academically in math, they offer placement tests to help you. This isn’t just for homeschoolers. CTCMath is designed for any student to improve their understanding of mathematics. Students can watch consise instructional videos, solve problems directly in the program or print worksheets, and after submitting answers, can view solutions to problems.
Now, let me give you my thoughts on CTCMath (https://www.ctcmath.com) I really like it. You’ve got everything you need to help your child level up in math in one place. CTCMath is your teacher, tutor, and test administrator all in one. I put CTCMath up against the biggest math lover in my house and he adapted just fine. Navigation is very intuitive and Cash had no trouble completing lessons on his own. And as his parent, I had no trouble reviewing his results.
As your child’s teacher you have total control of what lessons are assigned to your child right from the parent dashboard. Need your child to practice multiplication using 9’s? Add a task to that child’s account. It’s as simple as choosing the “Add a Task” button and choosing the appropriate lesson, test, or questions. You can even chose the date for the assignment.
It doesn’t matter that my child is a first grader. If you have a Gifted student and they are working on multiplication, you still have access to all of those lessons and yes, you can assign them. A definite plus for us. Here is another wow factor for us when it comes to CTCMath – Metric Units. My little Engineer/Scientist/Doctor in Training insists on learning what the science community uses for math. So he’s learning Metric units first and then Imperial units a little later. While using CTCMath it’s no problem to study whichever we like.
As parents, we have a significant amount of control using CTCMath – but did you know that your kids have their own controls as well? In addition to individual logins (nope, they aren’t working from your parent account), students can go into settings and change the colors and themes of their pages to suit them. If you gave them a block of time to complete an assigned task, they can go ahead and work on it, or save it for later. Kids need a brain break or want a challenge? They can scroll to the bottom of their main page and choose from three different games with tons of levels. However, what they can’t do is get through a level without completing it to your specified passing score. This way, you’re confident that a lesson has actually stuck and hasn’t been rushed.
My final thoughts? I’m really enjoying CTCMath and I would have no trouble using it for either our full curriculum for the year OR as a tutoring supplement. It’s an excellent program, well thought out by educational experts, and definitely worth more than it’s minimal price.
